Head Leads
Which End is Up?
Awareness: Asking the above question about ourselves is a good place to start the self-observation, (though awareness in the AT context takes in the broadest expanse of our behavior). When an animal moves, the top of the head leads forward, and the body continues in that direction in space, right? Up is toward the top of the head. The design is essentially the same for us: Head leading up correlates to the continuation of the length along the spine.
But we have come back and up from our original four legged crawling behavior to our bipedal state, so we confuse the direction we are moving in space (usually forwards) with the vertebrate orientation of our bodies. And we have become so visually dominant that we have lost our good kinesthetic sense. FMA called it “debauched kinesthesia”!
